EXPLORING THE POPULARITY OF PODCASTS

When was the last time you went a whole week without listening to your faves, ‘I Said What I Said’, ‘The Honest Bunch’, ‘Menisms’, and so on? That’s because, in today’s world, we’re all about finding new ways to connect and engage with the things we love. One rising trend in Nigeria right now is podcasts, audio shows you can listen to whenever and wherever you want!

Let’s dig into why more and more people are getting into podcasts.

Podcasts evolved from traditional radio, with the term originating from “iPod” and “broadcast.” Podcasts represented a change in how we listened to audio, letting us choose when to hear it instead of following set schedules. This shift made it possible for lots of different people and topics to be heard by a global audience, making content creation more open to everyone.

Another thing that made podcasts boom is that they provide something for everyone. Whether you want to hear the gist and stories, learn new things, or just have a good laugh, there’s a podcast out there for you. From gaming and movies to science and stories, the options are endless. You get to choose what interests you the most

Podcasts also mix things up. Sometimes it’s one person talking, other times it’s a group chat. You can feel like you’re right there with them. Plus, you don’t always need to stare at a screen; just pop in your earphones, and you’re good to go. It’s a fun and different way to take in information.

Podcasts aren’t just for listening. A lot of people today make money from them too. And while popular platforms like Spotify, Podbean, and Anchor don’t directly pay podcasters, the potential for income lies in building a dedicated audience and attracting advertisers and sponsors. LinkedIn reports that in 2023, some of the most successful podcasters earned substantial sums, sometimes reaching beyond $10,000 per month. Podcasters can have ads or special episodes for paying listeners, who support their favorite creators while enjoying their content.

This has led to the rise of podcasts in the Nigerian space, as shows with the highest number of fans have enjoyed the mass success of their product along with the increased popularity of their hosts.
